For any laundry product sold in the US to claim disinfectancy, it must pass a series of tests and register with the EPA. Clorox® Regular-Bleach has done this. Thus, when consumers follow label instructions they can be confident they are eliminating germs and bacteria in their laundry, and also their clothes washer. This product is for white items or colored items made with dyes or fibers not damaged by the sodium hypochlorite active (so no bleaching wool, silk, mohair, spandex or leather, whether it is white or not). Unfortunately, there is currently not a product for disinfecting any and all colored laundry items. Clorox2® has a different bleach active, hydrogen peroxide, at a low concentration that is safe for colors. However, it doesn’t meet EPA disinfecting requirements for killing germs or bacteria, so you are correct. Anytime you see a product that claims to disinfect, sanitize or kill germs, check the label for an EPA registration. That’s your guarantee that the product has been confirmed to perform as promised when used as directed. In a typical top loading deep-fill washer, one rinse cycle following a wash cycle where bleach was added is sufficient in removing the bleach from the load. The sodium hypochlorite active, breaks down very quickly into salt and water over the course of the wash cycle—that’s a big part of what makes it so environmentally friendly. That said, some people like an additional rinse cycle, such as those who are sensitive to any bleach smell. Other times, people observe that their washer’s rinse water still has quite a few suds, and decide to add on another rinse cycle just to help the machine finish the job.
