Neutralizing Rinse

Q:  How do I make a neutralizing rinse?

A: This is an interesting question – what do you want to rinse?  In general, the rinse cycle that follows the wash cycle, will effectively neutralize a laundry load with bleach.  However, there are times when people are working on fabric projects where they use bleach for decorative effects!  Under these circumstances, you want to quickly stop the bleaching action from sodium hypochlorite (the active in Clorox® Regular-Bleach).  In that case, a hydrogen peroxide solution that’s 1 part hydrogen peroxide + 10 parts water will work.

Readers, do any of you use bleach for decorative fabric effects?

My husband recently winterized our camper/trailer and used Clorox bleach with a stiff brush to get rid of some rain water stains on the interior canvas. He said it worked beautifully; however, when I asked if he rinsed it with anything he said "no". The trailer is a pop top and he closed it for winter... will the bleach continue to weaken the fabric in this situation? Would it be advisable for us to open it back up and apply a neutralizing "scrub"?? Thanks so much!

Hi Deborah, You should definitely re-open the trailer and rinse away any residual bleach. That’s because it sounds like he applied the bleach undiluted (which, by the way, we never recommend since use of undiluted bleach can result in holes and/or yellowing that don’t always happen immediately but do develop over time). Hopefully you can flush the treated area with a little water and prevent any damage to interior canvas.
