Tiffany, Clorox

Hi! I'm Tiffany. When I'm not chasing my son around for diaper changes, convincing my daughter not to wear goggles to bed, or trying to get unidentified stains out of my kids' clothes, I work in the marketing department at Clorox.

Day 4: The Washing Machine Cleanse

You’ve heard of a body cleanse? Well, today I’ve decided to give my washing machine a cleanse.

According to a story from a CBS Early Show last year, with each load of laundry, your laundry machine accumulates bacteria shed by the clothing being washed. Add my son’s Max’s potty-training mishaps to the mix, and I’m sure I’m starting to build up some unsanitary (or OK, “gross”) conditions in my ol’ washing machine.

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but it seems like every time I go near my washing machine, I’m carrying basket loads of dirty laundry … and the thought of washing my washer was far from my mind.

But Day #4 of the 7-Day Clorox® Bleach Challenge is the perfect opportunity to finally get around to this task. So today, to sanitize my machine and give it a body cleanse of its own, I ran my washer as usual, but I didn’t include any clothes. Instead, I just added ¾ cup of Clorox® Regular-Bleach and turned that machine on. Voila! One cycle later, I had a sanitized washer!

I also learned that since I own an HE machine, I am supposed to run one of these “cleanses” at least once a month.  I should also leave the door of the washer open to allow water from the load to evaporate.  Apparently, the water doesn’t completely drain from these washing machines, which means the retained water is ripe for bacteria and mildew to breed. Uh, no thank you!

So that was my so-called “cleanse” for the month.  Better the washing machine than me!

Don’t forget to leave a comment or bleach tip in the section below during this week-long challenge for a chance to be randomly selected to win a $100 Visa Gift card!

Whenever we do major cleaning (floors, bathrooms, kitchen, etc.) of course Clorox is part of the job. Instead of sponges, we use old terry cloth towels, then clean our washer and towels at the same time, with more Clorox in the washer.

I'm with Debbie V. I had never thought of "cleansing" my washing machine either. I'll definitely be doing this today! Thanks for the great tips!

I've been running loads of bleach water for years to sanitize and clean my washer, but I will add 1 or 2 cleaning rags to the load so they will swish around and wipe surfaces, then after running the load I wipe the rest fo the drum and surface with a bleach solution I keep in a spray bottle in the laundry room. We have pets and kids so I have always been a little fanatical when it came to certain appliances and keeping them clean.

I never really thought about giving my washer a "body cleanse." I'll use the Clorox but I guess tossing in a rubber ducky is out of the question, huh?

I had heard about leaving the washing machine door open after washing to let the water dry out and I do this each time I run the washing machine but if I hadn't known, this would have been a great tip. Thank you!

Good advice and much cheaper than buying the special "washer cleaner" at the store. I also use Clorox in my dishwasher occasionally, especially flu season.

Yes, a sanitized washing machine is a good thing, and that kind of cleanse is more fun than the maple syrup/lemon juice diet kind of cleanse. Great job!
