Tiffany, Clorox

Hi! I'm Tiffany. When I'm not chasing my son around for diaper changes, convincing my daughter not to wear goggles to bed, or trying to get unidentified stains out of my kids' clothes, I work in the marketing department at Clorox.

What IS it with Dudes & their cars?

For me, a car is something you use to get from A to B.  As long as it doesn’t break down, I don’t really mind if it’s old or the paint is chipping; it just has to get us reliably to swim class or the zoo.

For my husband, it’s a different story.  He’s the master of the car domain.

Now thankfully, my partner isn’t overly car-obsessed; I mean, I think the fact we have two kids makes that physically impossible…but it’s the unspoken rule that all-things car in our household are definitely his territory.  And while I’m secretly glad that he takes on the car-related tasks, it got me wondering… what IS it with dudes and cars?

Here’s what I mean…

Cleaning

Me:  Willingly picks up mop, sponge or wipe and will get our kitchen clean

Him:  Avoids cleaning the kitchen with a 10 foot pole (or in his case, a 5 foot mop)…but put my husband in front of our car and he has a field-day cleaning the interior and exterior with as much care as the guy who polishes the Hope Diamond.   He’ll happily clean unidentified sludge out of his engine compartment, but good luck getting him to clean the tub.

Before, this obsessive cleaning used to annoy me.  I mean, “It’s just a car, right?  We LIVE in our home!”  But now I secretly love it.  Why?  Because two kids sprang from my loins and like it or not, we now spend WAY more time in our car than we ever thought possible.   The evidence of this is apparent:  crackers now litter the car floor, blueberries are squished into car seats and droplets of foul-smelling milk cling to the back windows.

Now I’ve tried climbing over those carseats and contorting my body to wipe our back windshield, but it wasn’t pretty, nor successful.  Yet my husband somehow does that with the speed and efficiency of a well-trained ninja.  I thank him for his car-cleaning obsession...And the bonus is that he takes the kids out with him and they all have a good time with the bubbles and the water-hose!

 Organizing the Garage

Me:  Would rather get a root canal than clean out our garage.

Him:  Makes it his personal mission to reorganize the place like he’s auditioning for “Extreme Makeover: Garage Edition”.   He pokes fun at how I obsessively organize our bathroom drawers (and ok, I am a little obsessive), but when it comes to arranging the boxes and tools in the garage, he files things away like he invented the Dewey decimal system.   Twice a year, our dingy garage is suddenly transformed.  Boxes labeled “Family photos 2006”, “Elle’s clothes: 6mos-2T” are stacked tidily to one side; power tools that I don’t understand (seriously, I once thought the circular saw was some sort of gardening device) are neatly arranged, and any stains on the ground are bleached away. Hey, I’m not protesting…I’m just saying I don’t know what it is with dudes and garages…

Packing a Trunk

Me:  Can awkwardly fit a stroller and 3 bags of groceries in the trunk of our car.

Him:  Can pack one stroller, 2 suitcases, 2 carry-on bags, one bulky diaper bag, a portable potty and  probably five bags of groceries inside same said trunk.  I don’t know why, but for some reason, my husband can pack a car trunk like a Tetris champion.  Every last piece of luggage is perfectly placed; every nook and cranny of the trunk is efficiently filled.  Needless to say, he does the packing for all road-trips...(because we need to travel with more than a stroller and 3 bags of groceries.)

So there you have it.  Questions but no answers…I really don’t know what it is with Dudes and Cars, but I’m not complaining!

there is no better way to keep your family safe on the outside by starting to keep them safe on the inside.we use bleach to clean and whiten up sinks. clease all bathrooms. Use it in the wash to keep whites white. It can make close last longer because they do not fade. it removes soap film in the shower. i use it on my kitehen counter tops if i gat a stain. spray some bleach on it. waie about a minute then wipe away. the stain is gone. i have been trying to get my daugther to use bleach as well. now on the outside good handwashing and some handsantizar,

He flips out over a receipt or a crumpled napkin in the floor of the car. If he finds an old dessicated french fry between the seats, it sparks a major episode. Before any vacation, he takes the car to be detailed. I think that's backwards, he should detail it AFTER the trip but I'm not saying anything or he'd just do it before AND after! The same guy leaves socks, used glasses and dirty plates everywhere in the house.

Dudes & their Cars, you ask?! Let's just say that my husband has had a "love affair" with his car (1973 Nova) for 35+ years and it's still going strong! Clorox remains in this picture (it's not just for household use, you know) and doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon. I wish I could say that time has been as kind to me!

My husband and my father are definitely not the masters of the automobile domain, especially when it comes to cleaning! They both make a rolling pigsty/packrat nest out of their trucks. I learned about keeping vehicles clean from my Mom. Mom and I would frequently spend an entire day cleaning my father's truck as one of his Father's Day presents. My Father lost a Christmas present that he bought for my Mom somewhere in his truck over three years ago, and he still hasn't found it. I borrowed his truck when my daily driver was in the shop last year, and spent a day cleaning, washing, and waxing it--like old times. I found a folder of items that he lost in his truck from before he retired over six years ago. I don't clean out the inside of my husband's vehicles, as it is a futile effort, but my daughter and I wash his truck and car every two months. I am extremely persnickety about my vehicles being kept clean. I valiantly scrub carpets, floormats, consoles, seats, doorsills, and windows to remove the food, fingerprints, and dirt. Every floss pick and ice pop wrapper I find stuffed under seats, inside door pockets, or in armrests saddens me, as it seems like disrespect to me, since my familly knows how much I care about how my automobile looks.

Hmmm, this one can be tough, Stephanie. It sounds like he hates cleaning cars almost as much as I do! How about encouraging him by hinting how much you appreciate clean cars? The next time you walk by a newly-washed car, try saying "Wow, I just love how shiny that car looks!" and see if he gets the hint. If he doesn't, try offering an explicit swap: "Let's make a deal. This Saturday, I'll clean the kitchen; you clean the car!" If he still doesn't get it, then give him a choice: "Clean the toilets or clean the car! You choose!" My guess is he'll probably choose the car!

I have to be master of my own car - my car is the primary vehicle for transporting the kids, vacation, etc and if I didn't clean it routinely - ouch, what a mess!

I am master of my car domain when it comes to driving it, but my husband is master of all our vehicles when it comes to cleaning them. He is very particular and thorough. He has to make sure there are no water marks anywhere on the exterior, once he is done washing. And don't even THINK of going thru any carwash that isn't touch-free! Those brushes touching the car are like nails on a chalkboard to him!

Ever since I started dating my husband 34 years ago, my husband has loved cleaning up his vehicles... no matter what condition they were in, by gosh they were clean, inside and out...and I can't remember how long it's been since I've helped him, probably because " I don't know how to clean like he does" according to him...;-)

Not my husband. Usually it is me that cleans the car! I find it relaxing. I'm more picky than he is. I just can't stand a dirty car. He finds it to be to much work. lol
