Holiday Preparations: 4 Things NOT To Do

Whoever came up with the idea to celebrate Thanksgiving and the December holidays so close together should be raked across hot coals—or at least  forced to babysit my kids while I prep for the holidays.   I barely have enough time to get the cranberry sauce out of my hair before it’s time to hunker down and get ready for December.

Don’t get me wrong, the holidays are truly my favorite time of year.  I love seeing the kids excited for family celebrations and getting to indulge into a steamy hot cocoa and other seasonal treats.  (Though what’s up with eggnog? I still don’t get eggnog. ).  But holidays are also the busiest time of year.  So while I haven’t mastered prepping for the holidays without losing my sanity, I have learned 4 things NOT to do.

1. DON’T try out too many new recipes at once

If you’re already under stress from getting all the last minute details done, don’t add trying out a set of brand new recipe to the list.  Unless you just won a cooking contest, it’s ok to stick with your tried and true favorites (or your tried and true cans.)  Sometimes it’s these favorites that become the holiday traditions for your kids.

2. DON’T leave Cleaning to the last minute

If you’re like me, cleaning gets relegated to the bottom of the to-do list beneath “dental surgery” and “taking my kids to get dental surgery.”  But trust me, waiting til the last moment to get the house “guest-ready” is not a good idea.   You don’t want to be that host who leaves guests on the doorstep because you’re sprinting to tidy up before opening the door.  I know this because I’ve sweatily greeted guests 5 minutes after they’ve rung the doorbell repeatedly with, "Oh sorry, I didn’t hear the doorbell ring.  No, really, I’ll hang up your coat for you.  Don’t open that closet door. No, I insist.  I said DO NOT OPEN the closet door!” At a minimum, give your place a quick wipe down with disinfecting wipes to give some semblance of basic cleaning.

3. DON’T Clean the Oven

You heard me.   If you’ve ever needed it, you’ve just gotten permission to step away from the appliance and let it be.  Why? Because assuming you’re using the self-clean cycle, that cycle can actually be quite taxing on the oven which means it could fail right as you’re sticking in the Thanksgiving turkey.  Instead, wait til after your big meal before tackling the oven cleaning.

4. DON’T Get Too Caught Up in the Hustle and Bustle

Relax.  Easier said than done, right?  Maybe.  But isn’t it worth a shot?  Amidst all the cleaning, stuffing various vegetables inside turkey carcasses and shopping for gifts, Mom just needs a glass of wine.  And a yoga class.  And a pedicure.  And a nanny.   But remember, you can be an incredible mom, chef, home organizer and savvy shopper.  You just don’t have to be all of these in a single day.

What are your tips for prepping for the holidays?   Share your tip in the comments section of the blog and one lucky commenter will be randomly selected to win a $100 Visa® gift card. Think of all the holiday stress you can beat with that!

No Purchase Necessary. Open to legal residents of the 50 United States and DC who are at least 18 years of age at the time of entry. Void where prohibited. http://www.clorox.com/legal/promotions/ for full rules. Contest starts 11/28/12 & ends 12/14/12.

Reduce the stress of decorating by deciding not to get it all completed in one day or have the rest of the family help~ order a pizza for dinner and make it a party! For your holiday dinner have everyone bring a dish so you don't have to do all the cooking.

My tip: Don't leave one luscious Honey Baked Ham sitting on a dining room table while you're otherwise occupied in the kitchen whipping potatoes into a frenzy thinking "oh, the dog is old and has arthritis, that ham is perfectly safe on the table without a spotter". WRONG. Apparently the lure of ham has been known to cause spontaneous regeneration of arthritic joints in fat, old dogs. My dog became the Gabby Douglas of Olympic stretches as he pulled piece after piece of ham off the platter while his back paws never left the floor. We're pretty sure he managed about 7 good size pieces before being busted by my daughter in the act. Invest in a spotter. One big thing I learned this year was to ask for help. Not only having incoming family bring a dish to share, but from my immediate family. Instead of actually asking my husband to help me that day, I dropped "hints" like "We need to wash out and pair up the Tupperware for leftovers before tomorrow" and he didn't realize I meant WE...US. So as I'm standing in the kitchen, throwing Tupperware around trying to match lids and getting frustrated because 500 other things needed to be done and he was sitting in the living room watching T.V., I could have saved the later argument and just walked in and asked him to help me. I think next year, I'm making a list of things that need to be done, split them up between me, my husband and my daughter and tell each one they need to have their lists complete by the holiday.

My tip is to get a oven liner mat for quick cleanups. But my problem was I didnot wipe it down each time I used it so I was preparing the turkey and thought oh nuts now what do I do about this oven. So I took the oven liner mats and soaked them in clorox and water and a little dish detergent in the sink overnight. When I got up the next day I rinsed them and they where ready for my oven and that turkey and cookies and pies to be cooked. LOVE CLOROX!! You saved the moment!!!!!

OH I understand you on the Eggnog thing, my husband loves the stuff and I gag just thinking about it. I just attempted my first Thanksgiving meal for our family and it was a fail as far as cooking the turkey goes... Don't get me wrong the bird was beautiful with a delicious looking golden roast however its back was completely RAW like it was never in the oven. Nope it wasn't the oven that had a problem I had a few issues that were from not knowing what I was doing. I had complained about having to go to family events when we lived close to home because of so much drama but at least there was safe edible food. And lots of pie... and scratch made cheesecake... yummy! Now that we live half the country away from our loved ones I would deal with the drama as it was part of the tradition any how. Our quiet Thanksgiving was too quiet. So my tip is, Enjoy your family and friends while you have them! We truly don't know when we will meet with them again drama or not. Also remember that around the holidays you are never alone with family drama, after all it is when the stores come out with the giant festive cans of popcorn, so grab a can and enjoy the show. And the pie... everyone loves pie...

Don't use a bunch of bleach and not wipe it all off! I had that happen and when my mother in law leaned up against the counter it got all over her new red sweater! Another thing would be don't use too much fragrance! If someone has allergies or you over do it it can cause headaches. My last one would be, if you have a doubt about freshness or the use by date of a food or drink item that you are serving to friends and family just throw it out! You don't want people getting sick or yourself getting sick and spending the rest of the holidays in the ER or hugging the toilet.

Making a "bucket list" and setting a deadline for it, its easier to pick something small on a busy day(maybe even a couple of things) and do the bigger things when I have more time. Precooked meals and keeping things tidy with disinfecting wipes helps alot during the week too.

I loved the comment about not cleaning the oven! That can happen! But also, I have cleaned my oven years ago and it had a smell in it like the cleaner I was using even though I kept cleaning and cleaning to get it out I just couldn't get the smell out of the oven or the house. Thank goodness I have grown up since then.

    1. Do not use drink all 12 ounces of eggnog (spiked with Rum) right before your "dear" mother-in-law shows up for the Christmas celebration, my suggestion is that you only drink 6 ounces and save the other 6 for when she starts talking. 2 Do not leave the 10 lbs fruit cake someone gave as a gift seating in plain view inside the trash can, it may hurt their feeling to see you broke the re-gifting chain 3. Do not tell your philanderer brother's new girlfriend, that she shouldn't have bother bringing a gift (Why ruin her holidays by telling her she won't be around by New Year) 4 Do not turn off the heat of the house to make the house uncomfortably cold so your mother-in-law leaves early...be nice, just pack her a to go box with her left over and crank up the MP3 player to the tune of "hit the road Jack...
