Tiffany, Clorox

Hi! I'm Tiffany. When I'm not chasing my son around for diaper changes, convincing my daughter not to wear goggles to bed, or trying to get unidentified stains out of my kids' clothes, I work in the marketing department at Clorox.

What’s Your Cleaning Confession?

We all have dirty little secrets when it comes to cleaning, because let’s face it, as a mom, it’s hard to keep a perfect house without some trade-offs. Here are a few of mine. What are yours? Share your confession below for a chance to win a $100 gift card.

1)   I sometimes clean up after my kids because it’s easier than getting them to clean up after themselves.

As much as I’d love to take every opportunity to teach my kids to clean up after themselves, I admit that sometimes it’s just less stressful to pick up after them than to undergo the painstaking process of convincing them to clean up their own messes. As I type this, my living room floor is littered with wooden trains because tonight I preferred to get my preschooler in bed rather than face the 20-minute challenge of convincing my son that Thomas and Gordon didn't want to go for another race around the track.

2)   I find weird stuff in my washing machine.

I know I’m supposed to diligently check and empty pockets before items go into the washer, but either it’s really hard to do laundry with a preschooler affixed to one’s leg, or I’m just not a laundry expert As a result, I have found some strange things in my washing machine. Tissue wads and coins are pretty typical for many. But once I also found an entire diaper (clean as a whistle, I might add!), which was clearly tossed into the hamper along with the dirty sweatpants it resided in. It was also clear evidence that I do not sort laundry thoroughly enough.   I’ve also found soggy stickers, plastic toys from local fast food chains and too many rocks to count. Some days it’s like my washing machine is where random objects go to die.

3)  I’ve been known to “short cut” when company comes.

Instead of cleaning the bathroom, I just scrub the faucets till they shine because hey, a shiny faucet makes it seem like the rest of my bathroom is clean, right?  I also make sure the toilet isn’t covered with any potty training mishaps because we all know that a dirty toilet is the most “guest-noticeable” gross-out in a bathroom.  And who needs a dead giveaway that you didn’t painstakingly clean up the place before they arrived?

If it smells good, guests will usually assume your house is clean. I make sure to use Clorox clean up on the counter tops so the house smells clean and fresh.

When company is coming I will put a half cup of clorox in tank of toilet to make bathroom smell fresh, I also pour a little down kitchen drain. Makes it smell as if you just cleaned. If I do not have time to thouroughly clean.

I sometimes pay my daughter to clean up her brothers toys. He is just 2 and really doesnt understand and after cooking, cleaning, and taking care of 5 kids i am so tired. She said she loves it cause she gets extra money and dont have to do much.

I don't do a full cleaning every week, like my mother always did! I swiffer/vaccuum and do a quick dusting and toilet cleaning and go do something fun. I do a full cleaning every two to three weeks. We are all happier and no one really notices, anyway.

I confess than when the kids (2 and 3) find a secret spot to make a mess and it sticks, I use a butter knife to get rid of the caked on "surprise". After throwing away the debris, I use a Clorox wipe and finish the job off right.. Gets the really tough jobs done and keeps my home as germ free as possible.

In the absence of a thorough clean, I use lots of cleaning products to do a once-over on the kitchen and bathroom. A fresh and clean "smelling" house is the next best thing to a truly clean house.

I stack things neatly in piles (i.e. bills, paperwork, mail, magazines, etc.) so that it has the appearance of being organized even if I have no idea what's in them. A shortcut but it definitely helps make things look better!

I confess that I only regularly vacuum our 1st floor (twice a week) because that's where the main traffic is. My husband is in charge of vacuuming the 2nd floor, and he only does it once every 2 weeks, after I've worn him down with my nagging. Luckily the 2nd floor where the bedrooms are don't get too dirty because I have a no-shoe policy.
