Essilor International

Essilor® is an application-focused company active in the field of human vision. It is an industrial company manufacturing and marketing lenses and some related equipment. It created the first commercial progressive addition lens under the now well-known "Varilux"® brand name, which is still the flag of the leading line of products for presbyopic correction.
Orma® (organic lens), Crizal® (multifunction coating), etc. are other recognised brand names of Essilor® products. The photochromic organic lenses Transitions® have been developed in a Joint Venture with PPG®, an American chemical group.
Essilor® is the biggest manufacturer of spectacle corrective lenses in the world. Its 2000 turn over is about 1,98 G€, and its payroll is about 22 000 people. It is a French group, with manufacturing and sales subsidiaries all over the world.
As an optical company, Essilor® has developed a good technical and industrial knowledge of human vision, optical design, surface measurements, optical materials and coatings, surface physics and chemistry, and optical workshop surfacing and moulding technology, including aspherical-asymmetrical high precision micro-machining.
The company continuously builds up its technical expertise with R&D and Engineering teams located in Europe, America and Asia.
