When boiling off water for 1 minute is not practical, disinfect water by the following method:
1. Remove suspended particles by filtering or letting particles settle to the bottom.
2. Pour off clear water into a clean container.
3. Add 12 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of Clorox® Regular-Bleach₁, concentrated (not scented or Clorox® Plus® bleaches) to two gallons of water (2 drops to 1 quart). For cloudy water, use 24 drops per two gallons of water (3 drops to 1 quart).
4. Let treated water stand for 30 minutes. Water should have a slight bleach odor. If not, repeat and wait another 15 minutes. The treated water can then be made palatable by pouring it between clean containers several times.

We’ve done a great deal of research to ensure we are meeting consumer’s needs. Because the product will be concentrated, the new Clorox® Bleach bottle will be easier to handle and easier to use in high-efficiency washing machines, which have built-in bleach dispensers. In addition, the concentrated formula will provide improved whitening on clothes and be able to kill viruses like norovirus on hard surfaces. And because the size of the bottle will be smaller, we can significantly reduce the amount of water used in bleach and the amount of packaging used, which is better for the environment.

There will be the same number of uses per bottle in the concentrated bleach as there was before so the cost per use will be the same as our previous bleach products.

Clorox will be letting consumers know about the change in a variety of ways. On the bleach bottle it will say "now concentrated". And in many stores there will be additional signage in the laundry aisle. In addition, we will be letting consumers know via our TV advertising, public relations materials, website and Facebook page.

Can Clorox® Regular-Bleach₁, concentrated be used to disinfect water?

Clorox's answer:

1. Remove suspended particles by filtering or letting particles settle to the bottom.
2. Pour off clear water into a clean container.
3. Add 12 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of Clorox® Regular-Bleach₁, concentrated (not scented or Clorox® Plus® bleaches) to two gallons of water (2 drops to 1 quart). For cloudy water, use 24 drops per two gallons of water (3 drops to 1 quart).
4. Allow the treated water to stand for 30 minutes. Water should have a slight bleach odor. If not, repeat and wait another 15 minutes. The treated water can then be made palatable by pouring it between clean containers several times.
